Patina or damage? How to tell what your metal needs

A quick check for what is cosmetic, what needs cleaning and what should stop you from using the piece.

01

First, look at the kind of change

Brass and copper naturally darken. Handling may keep raised areas brighter while recessed detail becomes deeper in tone.

An even colour shift is usually cosmetic. Powdery residue, active corrosion, loose parts or damaged cooking lining needs closer attention.

02

Decide how bright you want it

For a darker, aged finish, clean gently and polish rarely. For more shine, use a product made for that metal and test it on a hidden area first.

Texture and engraving trap polish easily. Use a small amount and a soft cloth or brush.

03

Dry it before you store it

After washing, wipe the piece immediately. Let bottles, boxes and lidded vessels air fully before closing or stacking them.

A note on material guidance

Product construction varies. Always follow the listing and care card for the exact piece you own, especially for cookware and food contact.
